Ball Haul Propels Second XI

Match Report | 3rd September 2010

Second XI Friendly
Nottinghamshire (458) beat Northamptonshire (240 & 153) by an innings & 65 runs

At tea on the second day with Northants on 102-2 wanting a further 116 to avoid an innings defeat with Niall O'Brien not out 58 and batting fluently, the last thing anyone expected was for the match to be all over 90 minutes later.

Step in Jake Ball who in his first five overs after tea took 5-9 including O'Brien for 60 to reduce the visitors to 120-7 & claimed a 6th wicket in his last over for a spell of 6-31 from eleven overs to finish with 6-56.

Ball was a determined figure having conceded 25 runs from his three-over spell prior to tea.

He was helped by some superb leg side catching by wicket keeper Paul Dixey who had earlier impressed whilst scoring 88 in a stand of 189 for the seventh wicket with Richard Stroh who scored 84.

This stand took the match away from Northamptonshire and ultimately led to their demise.

Niall O'Brien, the Ireland wicketkeeper, made his comeback after injury in the match and played well during the opening morning contributing 82 runs to a first session total of 159-6.

Richard Stroh (4-66) and Graeme White (2-42) bowled well to dismiss the visitors for 240 before Notts built a winning total with half-centuries from Patel (51), Shafayat (65), Dixie (88) and Stroh (84).

Essex End Second Eleven Trophy Hopes

Match Report | 1st September 2010

Essex (304-7) beat Nottinghamshire (260) by 44 runs

Notts failed to reach the final of the Second Eleven Trophy at Trent Bridge being defeated by a more experienced Essex side.

Notts had to field a weakened bowling attack who bowled well up to the 40th over restricting Essex to 190-4, however a forceful knock from Mervyn Westfield who scored 58 from just 26 balls took the game from the home side who conceded 114 from the last 10 overs.

Michael Comber had proved to be the mainstay of the Essex batting with 80 from 101 balls supported by Godleman (45), Grant Flower (37) and West (33).

Richard Stroh was the pick of the home attack taking 3-51. Graeme White bowled his ten overs tidily taking 1-36.

Notts in reply were 96-4 from 16 overs having lost Patel & Edwards for 20 apiece , Matthew Wood scored 39 and Bilal Shafayat 3.

Scott Elstone and Richard Stroh then added 114 for the 5th wicket & at one stage looked to be giving Notts a chance of winning, however Elstone nicked one to the keeper when on 71 and Stroh was out for 58 with the score on 246 in the 46th over .

Fourteen balls later the game was over & it will be Essex to play Lancashire in the final.

Fianlly the Cockspur bubble has burst for the fantastic Cuckney 1sts

Despite a magnificent score of 154 off their 20 overs, Cuckney were beaten by an outstanding performance from Oundle's promising young star A. Reynoldson who scored 102 not out (surely one to watch for the future), along with 50 from C Wake.

Another amazing season in the Cockspur cup for Cuckney, and lets hope for another one next year too.
All the fans salute you for the way you have performed.

Yet another memorable match in the Cuckney 1sts march for the finals of the Cockspur cup 2010, if for no other reason than the thoroughly professional way in which they demolished the home club.

Cuckney won the toss and inserted Spondon on a soft wicket and soggy outfield, and so keeping the ball dry was paramount to getting the most out of the wicket. The opening bowlers Rich Stroh and Richard "Johnny" Bostock were excellent, keeping the runs to virtually nothing, and at the same time taking wickets.

From the start it was clear that Spondon were not in the same league as Cuckney, and after 3 overs only 2 runs had been scored, and at the end of the 6 over powerplay 17 runs were all they could muster. This at the same time as losing wickets meant that the task was getting harder and harder.

Pressure mounted, wickets fell, but not many runs were scored, and the final tally was 90 runs for 7 wickets off 20 overs, surely nowhere near enough, and so it proved to be.

Cuckney batted, and from the off never looked in any trouble, and Rich Stroh's 45 not out steering Cuckney to a comfortable victory, for the loss of only 2 wickets.

Man of the match:Rich Stroh with 45 not out and bowling of 4 overs, 1 wicket for 3 runs, was the outstanding player, amongst a team of outstanding players.

Well at the third time of asking we finally got a result to decide who went through to the next round of the Cockspur Cup.

On another wet and windy night the crowds turned out for what finished up being one of the best T20 matches I think I have ever seen.

Cuckney won the toss and put Clifton in, and from the start it was clear the conditions were making run scoring very difficult. Clifton were kept under raps early on by some tremendous pace bowling from Richard Stroh, who's final figures of 4 overs, 2 wickets for just 8 runs were outstanding in this form of cricket. Clifton lost a couple of early wicket, but then a stand of 37 in quick time brought them back into the game.

Once Liam Andrews was out however, the wickets fell at regular intervals, which kept the run rate down and Clifton stumbled to 119 for 9 off their 20 overs, surely this was not enough against a strong Cuckney batting side.

A steady start saw Cuckney reach 17, but then both Rich Stroh and Will Ullyott fell, and the rebuilding process began, but the pitch and dark light were making life very difficult for the batsmen (and fielders it must be said).

Tom Ullyott steadied the ship and partnerships with Will Butler, David Hunt and Ian Parkin gradually got Cuckney closer and closer, but the overs were running out rapidly.

With 3 overs to go Cuckney still needed 33 runs, and on a difficult wicket this was going to be a big ask, but a couple of big hits from Ian Parkin launched us back into it, and with 2 overs to go 18 runs were required. Hearts were beating fast as 10 runs were scored off the penultimate over, leaving 8 required off the final over, and this was when the drama really started.

A big 4 from Burgess and we were looking good, but Clifton came back into it, and with just 1 ball to go Cuckney needed 3 runs. Pressure was immense on both sides as the spinner bowled at Burgess' legs, and as he spun to strike the ball he missed it, and the keeper whipped the bails off. Appeals all round and the square leg umpires finger was straight up. Clifton were jumping for joy (and screaming quite loudly too), but wait....a loud call amongst the celebrations.......WIDE BALL. Keystones Kops movies were tame in comparison to the next few moments as batsmen ran, fielders removed bails and stumps, and when it all calmed down Cuckney had another ball to get just 2 runs now.

The stumping stood and Burgess left, for Danny Brown to replace him. The fielders circled the bat trying desperately to prevent a single, as it now transpired that Cuckney, having lost fewer wickets, only needed a tie to win the match (if that makes sense).

The final ball was delivered, Danny made contact and the ball squeezed between two of the fielders and the game was over, Cuckney had won against all the odds. The noise was almost deafening (Well I was stood next to Boz at the time)

And so off we go to Spondon for the next 2 matches in yet another Cockspur Cup saga for the Cuckney 1sts

Official Man of the Match for his 46 runs was Thomas Ullyott

Another close run game that the thirds just managed to squeeze a result out of, but keeps us on track for promotion.

Cuckney batted first on a pitch with very uneven bounce and pace, which made life very difficult for the openers, however an opening stand of 41 between Dan and Taylor set a good foundation before Taylor snicked off to the keeper.

Dan and Henri then put 71 on for the next wicket and things looked very rosy, and we continued to bat well, and despite a few poor running decisions, we racked up the runs, the highlight being a quick fire 59 from Andy.

At this point the reporter had a call that something urgent was happening at Cuckney (the 2nds were ready to bowl and Luke was opening), so he fled the scene.

With a very young (and old-no offence Graham n Cliff) bowling attack, we started well but then a couple of batsmen took hold and the runs racked up.

It came down to a close finish, and Taylor bowled superbly at the end to seal a winning draw for the lads.

Man of the match: Tough one with not being there, but Dan, who is becoming a rock at the top of the order, did well with 58. However we have joint winners this week with Andy for his rapid 59 which got us up to the score we needed and then Taylor with 9 overs, 3 wickets for just 13 runs helped stave off a late run by Weston, and won us the game. Well done both of you.

Farnsfield Vs Hucknall:

So Farnsfield the first team to 200 points. Still going strong at the top but having played 2 more games than 2nd and 3rd. Hucknall are lying in a respectable 4th place after being on the wrong side of a heavy losing draw last week against cuckney who racked up 359. In this game i feel Farnsfield will be much too strong for Hucknall especially with them coming off a fairley easy win against Glapwell last week.
Farnsfield Key players:
M Hanson still going strong with 558 at an average of 93. He is also not so bad in the field with 11 catches.
Hucknall key players:
R Maxwell could be key for Hucknall if they are to challenge the leaders. As he is leading the hucknall line up with 447 runs. Also A scott taking 22 wickets thus far.
My prediction:
Farnsfield looking too strong for me so Home win.

Glapwell Vs Edwinstowe:

Both these teams will be looking for a win this week, Glapwell come off a loss last week to Farnsfield and Edwinstowe return back after last weeks break. Glapwell will look to be putting pressure back on the top three as they have slipped behind by 33 points behind 3rd. Edwinstowe will be looking to add to the pressure they already have on the top 2. With only 13 points behind 2nd playing the same games, and 28 behind top but with 2 games more to play.
Glapwell Key Players:
M Goodwright still showing to be a good overseas this year with 305 runs and 18 wickets. Also R Davison now up there scoring 299 runs.
Edwinstowe key Players:
S Mcneil going well in the runs department with 421 runs so far.

My Prediction:
An away Edwinstowe win.

Mansfield and Pleasley Vs Welbeck:

M&P at this stage looking the favourites to go down as they are still looking for there first win. Welbeck not going as strong as first thought but there game in hand come show me wrong because if they take 20 from that they move back to fourth.
M&P come off a disapointing losing draw last week only managing to jus hold onto 122 for 8 chasing 237. The only positives from this performance was I woodhall's 3-45.

M&P key Players:
I Woodhall still trying to put a fight for the mansfield lads with 19 wickets.
Welbeck key Players:
C Murphy coming off a 92 runs last week adds to his tally with 387 for the season.

My Prediction:
An away Welbeck win.

Mansfield Hosiery Mills Vs Kirkby Portland:

Big game for both sides this. Possible drop zone contention for these sides. MHM on 97 points and Kirkby Portland on 93. I am unsure who i have down for this one. MHM have been a funny team this year, with games unable to raise sides and other games with weaker teams. But then again strong sides that have the ability to beat any side. Kirby portland will be willing to fight to the death in this match as it could prove a huge 20 points if they win. With a loss last week they will be dtermined to take full points.

MHM Key Players:
S Fernando avergaing 47 with a respectable 330 runs.
Kirkby Portland Key Players:
T Newcombe going well with the ball will be looking to make a big difference in this match and add to his current tally of 17 wickets.
My Prediction:
A Home MHM win.

The final game takes us to:

Millhouses Works Vs Cuckney:

Millhouses works also a team sitting on possible relegation this season will be looking to take 20 points and give themselves a little clearance from this. And will 3rd bottom playing 4th bottom big points here could prove to be a huge win. Cuckney still flying this year in the prem sitting in 2nd place still on there winning streak. Cuckney come off a big winning draw last week scoring 359 against a weakened Hucknall. The 2nd placed side only 15 points behind top stop with 2 more games to play. A win here will add pressure to farnsfield and show how hard it will be to stay at the top. Millhouses works will return fresh from there break last week.

Millhouses works Key Players:
P Holmes taking a respectable 13 wickets so far will be looking to be devastating this week with the ball.
Cuckney Key Players:
A Burgess now leading all the leagues top runs scoring with 669 in just 9 innings averaging 83.63. Also O Wilson coming off a 5-13 last week shows up with 20 wickets thus far. Just showing what he is capable with the bat T Ullyott who scored 149 last week.
My Prediction:
An away Cuckney win.

My Game to Watch
Glapwell Vs Edwinstowe the clash between 3rd and fifth could give the chasing pack a real shake up.

Apologies for the late report, but not had the scorebook

A clash of the titans, with the top 2 vying for the title as we run into the end of the season, but unfortunately the youngsters found it tough going against a strong adult East Drayton side.

Cuckney batted first, but struggled against a very accurate opening attack with the wicket moving the ball left and right, which led to the loss of two early wickets, and then after a small recovery 2 more quick wickets fell with the score only on 49.

Ed was the linchpin in the Cuckney revival, and with first Jo and then Luke the score nudged into points scoring territory and beyond.

A cameo from Henry left us on 168 for 9 at the end.

The one fact that sticks out in our innings is that ALL the wickets to fall were caught, maybe a lesson to be learnt by the batsmen here to keep the ball on the ground more!!

East Drayton batted and looked much comfier from the outset, and 56 runs were on the board before a wicket fell, and despite all our bowlers efforts, the Drayton batsmen were to wily for our young bowlers, and reached the target for 4 wickets, with 5 overs to spare.

A disappointing result, which throws the championship wide open again.

Man of the match: only one contender this week and that is Ed with 59, who held our batting together when it was really needed. Well done

A disappointing result for the flying thirds this week, though it wasn't all doom and gloom.

Wasn't at the game so relying on scorebook and players comments after I arrived

Cliff won the toss and inserted Anston on what was expected to be a difficult batting track after all the rain. However, a combination of this not being the case, and some uncharacteristically poor bowling, meant that Anston raced to 226 all out, using all their overs up in the process.

The only positive on the bowling side is Lukes 4 for 34 off 10.4 overs, another fine contribution from one of our most promising young guns.

I arrived with Cuckney batting, but it was already clear we were going to struggle to reach their score, and with half the overs gone, Cuckney were 59 for 5, with only Dan reaching 33 managing to hold the fort, and it looked like defeat was on the cards. After Dan was caught behind Mat joined Luke and they proceeded to put together a masterful 61 run partnership before Mat was out having reached a well earned 23.

Luke continued with Graham, and whilst Graham fell just before the end, the game was saved and a losing draw was more than I expected at half way.

Man of the match: Mat's 23 and Dans 33 put them in contention, but realistically only one winner this week with Luke bagging 4 for 34 off his 10.4 overs and then 52 not out means he takes the prize. Another star performance, well done.

The Cuckney III bandwagon rolls steadily on with another resounding victory over their 3rd placed rivals

Woodsetts batted first on what looked like a good track, but turned out to be a bit of a minefield, with balls rising sharply off a length and then shooting through along the ground when least expected.

The opening pair rode their look time and time again, with numerous dropped catches and skied shots into the gaps, and when the score had reached 43 we were beginning to think this could go onto be a big score. However the ever alert Danny had other ideas, and whipped the bails off when the batsman strode forward a little too far, and the partnership was broken.

This was just the boost the team needed, and the wickets started to tumble at regular intervals from then on, and it was left to Cliff with 3 wickets, and a magnificent spell from Connor to bag his first "5 for" at this level. Woodsetts finished all out on 119, and left Cuckney an extra 10 overs to get the runs.

Despite losing Aaron early, the Cuckney batsmen, led by Ben, always looked like reaching their target without too many worries, and this is how it turned out.

Ben batted untroubled for a well earned 68 not out, and was backed up by Dan with 24 and Ed 20 not out, a thoroughly professional performance.

Man of the match: A great innings by Ben came close, but this week it has to go to Connor with his first "5 for", he bowled line and length and let the batsmen make their own mistakes. Well done.

Back to the thirds again this week, so a full report, and thankfully back to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Manton.

Cuckney batted first and got off to a very shaky start, losing the first 3 wickets for only 16 runs. This brought Luke to the wicket to join Ed, who had survived the opening overs, but looked in good nick.

Thus began an immense partnership for not just Cuckney, but for the two lads involved in it. For Ed a return to the big runs he has been missing these past few weeks, and for Luke an opportunity to show what he can do with plenty of overs left to bat, and dispell the tag of quick run getter at the end of the innings.

They both went about this with an air of superiority, giving no chances to the opposition. Ed hit 11 fours in a magnificent 87, which almost saw him bat through the whole innings, a tremendous effort.

Luke smashed 14 fours in hitting his maiden 50 in any form of cricket (apart from the ones on the field with his mates at home), and looked like going on to make it a century, when he was cruelly cut short by a disputable LBW decision on 98. Disappointing some might say, but a landmark innings, and one he can add to his already impressive bowling figures............looks like being a stats review day in the Wood household on Sunday morning.

At the end of the innings Cliff, still in fine form after his magnificent hundred last week, dispatched 5 fours in a score of 28 to raise Cuckneys score to a record 258 off their 46 overs.

A daunting task lay ahead for Manton, and they never looked up to the task, and with Luke removing the top 3 batsmen, and Henry chipping in with a couple, the match was ours for the taking. It was left to the younger guns to finish them off, and Jo with 3 for 14 and Connor 2 for 17, the match was won, with 22 overs to spare. A resounding victory, and a great way to bounce back to winning ways, after the disappointment of last week.

With East Drayton losing this week, the gap at the top has been extended even further, and the title draws ever closer, though there is still a long way to go yet.

Man of the Match: A reasonably easy job for me this week, though Eds determination to rediscover his form was admirable to reach 87, it wasnt enough to surpass Lukes outstanding 98, and followed up with 3 wickets for 12 off 6 overs, he deserves this weeks accolade. Well done kiddo.

Yesterday Cuckney CC reached the final of the County section of the
Cockspur 20-20 final by beating local rivals Welbeck in yesterdays pre-
final matches. In their first game we had a comfortable win over
wollaton and then faced Welbeck who had knocked out Notts accademy. It
was a very exciting and close game with welbeck needing 10 off the
last two balls. Cuckney's local lad olly Wilson, who started playing cricket for
CCC at the age of 7 bowled the last over and did the buisiness.
Cuckney won by 6 runs.

Cuckney now move to the County finals at Trent Bridge on Friday 13th
August. This will be a spectacular occasion as it will be the first
time the county 20-20 finals will have been played at Trent Bridge.

Phew, finally a week when hearts weren't in mouths and blood pumping at twice the normal rate.

Farnsfield batted first and the usual opening bowling combo of Luke and Henry kept things tight in very windy conditions. Wickets began to tumble with them taking 2 apiece to reduce Farnsfield to 18 for 4 after 8 overs. Taylor and Cliff replaced the opening bowlers and continued to keep things tight, but wickets were harder to come by, and despite a spectacular run out by Ben, the runs steadily mounted.

Three good partnerships, and a few big overs lofted the score to a heady 175 for 9 at the close of Farnsfields innings, though they have regularly scored this many in their games, but been unable to defend it, and on a good track it always looked reachable.

Aaron and Dan opened the batting for Cuckney, and with neither of them having been in the best of form recently, both needed a good score to boost their morale, and so it transpired, with an excellent partnership of 116, Aaron making 53 and Dan continuing on to eventually make 70. The partnership effectively took the game away from Farnsfield, and despite losing one or two quick wickets, the game was finished off with 3 overs to go.

Its now ten games into the season, and the only thing to defeat this excellent young side is the weather, in the only game we did not win.

Well done team Cuckney III's

Man of the match: Only two standout performances this week, and both with the bat this time.Aaron with 53 starting to find his form after long term injury, but the winner this week is Dan, again searching for a return to his best, found it with 70 runs, and these two lads made this an easy win for Cuckney.

The "Blond Destroyer" strikes again to make this probably one of the easiest and most straight forward reports I have had to write.

Blyth batted first on a damp wicket that looked like it was going to "do a bit", with clouds overhead and moisture rising from the pitch as it dried out, Henry and Luke were looking to get into Blyths openers early on.

As expected right from the first over the ball was swinging and seaming, and the batsmen were about to find out what top quality swing bowling can do when the conditions are right. Luke proceeded to rip through the batting order with an amazing spell of 7 overs 4 maidens 6 wickets for 5 runs, including 3 wicket maidens in a row.

This sealed a low score for Blyth, and with Taylor picking up 2 wickets, and Connor 1.1 overs 1 wicket for 0 runs, Blyth finished on just 57 all out.

"Easy" you would think, but this team like to put the fans through the mire at every opportunity, and it became clear that the wicket was going to make life difficult for our batsmen too. The openers struggled to get going, then we lost 3 quick wickets when the score was still below 20, and the fans' hearts started to race a little.

Tom battled on in his first innings for a good while, and with Les pounding a couple of boundaries, and then Luke finding the rope a couple of times, we finally reached our target with 5 wickets down........Phew, an early finish for once.

Man of the match: Doesnt come much easier than this week, as Luke sealed the win with his bowling, not giving anyone else the opportunity to shine, though I am sure nobody minds that, as the Cuckney III bandwagon rolls on towards promotion and the Division 6 title.

Oh and just a final note.....Ed dont forget to pick your finger up next time you are at Cuckney

The Cuckney III bandwagon goes rolling along, with another away victory on another uneven wicket

Cuckney batted first, bolstered by 4 players from the 2nds, and after a poor start, losing both openers very early, Mark and Ed rallied with a steady start to settle the nerves, and then the onslaught followed after drinks.

Ed eventually fell for 26, and it was left to Andy and Stevey P from the 2nds to blast a few boundaries at the end, with Cuckney finishing on 162 for 8 off the allotted overs. During all this Mark continued to prosper and finished with 68, without which we would have had nothing to bowl at.

Harthills turn to bat, and their openers were in good form, despite riding their luck on a few occasions when one or two catches were spilled.

The opening bowlers couldnt prise the top 2 out, so Cliff decided to get in on the act, and quickly removed their no2, with a vicious appeal that the umpire couldnt refuse. Then the procession started, with Taylor & the returning Luke picking another couple. With not too many overs left Stevey P was thrust back into the fray & some wicked bowling smashed the stumps down on two occasions to leave Harthill reeling.

With Luke taking another, only one wicket remained, and yet again Steve stepped up and trapped the last batsmen plumb LBW, the scenes were rapturous, yet again.

Another 20 points for the thirds, and will keep us well clear at the top of the table.

Man of the Match: Stevey P came very close, and a "5 for" might just have clinched it, but the innings from Mark, when the team was struggling, showed his maturity and put us in a position to win the game, so he wins the award for this week. Well done an excelllent innings.

I think we are going to have to rename this team after the famous escapologist.......Houdini, because yet again they have pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat.

Cuckney batted first and got off to a dreadful start, with Taylor injured and Dan, Ben and Luke all failing, with only Ed of the top 5 hanging in there on an uneven track.

Cliff came in to support Ed, and between them they steadied the ship and pushed the score along nicely, until they both lost their wickets, and the tail looked to be exposed, with the score well short of where it needed to be, but yet again the youngsters proved they were up to the task.

Connor was joined by Jo when Adam was run out, and between them they not only hung around, but took the attack to the bowlers and with 4 after 4 they rattled the score along, and Cuckney finally finished on 146 for 8 off the allotted 46 overs. Fantastic stuff from the U13 guys, talk about strength in depth!!

Todwick batted and Luke and Cliff kept it very tight and removed 3 of the top 4 early, but then the big hitters arrived, and the runs flowed and again it looked like defeat was on the cards until Luke and Cliff came back with half the overs still to go, only 17 runs required, and 4 wickets still to fall.

Cliff started the procession, followed by Luke, and then Cliff removed the 8th wicket (they only had 10 men), so only one to go, but only 4 runs needed. A play and a miss off Cliff looked inocuous enough, until eagle eyed Dan noticed their batsman wandering out of his crease and threw the stumps down, and the game was ours.........amazing.......yet again.

Scorecard

Man of the match: This gets harder every week, with two outstanding bowling performances from Luke with 4 and Cliff with a 5 for, each of which could have been enough, but this week I am going to give a joint award to two young lads who havent batted too often this year, especially at this level, without whom this result would not have been possible, and they are Connor and Jo....fantastic effort lads, well done.

Yet another nailbiting finish, leaving the spectators awestruck & with looks of disbelief at the result.

Cuckney batted first, and struggled from the start to get the runs flowing, and when Dan broke his bat & was out next ball, things didnt look too good. Ed came and went with not too many more runs on the board.

Taylor was still there and Ben joined him, and whilst runs werent flowing, they steadied the ship, and gradually increased the pressure on the bowlers and fielders. With a stand of over 100, they turned the game around for Cuckney, and with some very strong hitting from Cliff at the end, we reached 175 off our 46 overs, which was a fantastic achievement after the slow start we made.

Now it was Cuckneys turn to field in the sweltering heat, and it showed, as the ball was despatched to all parts off the usually reliable openers, Luke and Henry. Ed faired no better, and the runs mounted rapidly. Luke managed to oust the opener before the end of his spell, but this didnt slow things down too much.

Cliff came on and restricted them a little, and in a moment of absolute madness, the other opener came dancing down the wicket, missed it and Dan thankfully smashed the stumps down. Could this be the turning point?

Ben snapped up a wicket early in his spell, but the score continued to move steadily towards the Cuckney total.

A couple more wickets fell, but the score continued to rise, and with Bawtry only needing one run or less per over, things looked bleak, and it seemed like Cuckney were heading for their first defeat of the season. How wrong these thoughts were!!

In what turned out to be one of the most inspired (some would say desperate) bowling changes in Cuckney III team history, Cliff brought the openers Luke and Henry back on, with Bawtry needing 10 runs off 17 overs, and 5 wickets in hand.

Luke first.......dot ball......wicket LBW.......wicket BOWLED, everybody looked at each other, could this really still be possible.......leg bye on the hat-trick ball (unlucky).........wicket BOWLED (OMG)........dot ball. 167 for 8. Henry bowled tight and took another wicket, snapped up in Ostler fashion by Kev at first slip......170 for 9 at the end of Henrys over.

Unbelieveably Cuckney were now favourites, but still needed one more wicket. Luke ran in with his sights set firmly on the middle stump and.................CRASH!!!!!! over it went and the team (and spectators) went wild at the spectacular end to what had looked like a lost cause just 2 overs ago.

Breathless!!!!!!!! is the word I would use for how the fans felt at the end, and another few years knocked off the old tickers thanks to a team that doesnt know when its beaten. An outstanding result, and another 20 points for Cuckney III's.

Man of the match: An unbelievably difficult choice this week, as we have 3 outstanding performances. Two of them with the bat from Taylor 53 and Ben 64 which under normal circumstances would both have been enough, but despite being despatched in his first spell, I cannot get past the match winning return Luke made, taking 4 wickets in 6 balls (and another "5 for" in the game) to effectively win a match that looked lost. I heard the phrase "the only thing he is missing is a cape", and this was indeed the performance of a super hero....though please dont tell him I said that or we will have to have new doors fitted at home.

The third round of fixtures in the Nottinghamshire Premier suffered heavily as a result of persistent rain in the East Midlands this Saturday; three of the games were abandoned without a ball being bowled, one was abandoned after only 8 overs and the remaining two produced results but in games reduced to 35 overs per side.

League leaders West Indian Cavaliers were one of the sides managing to complete a shortened game when they beat Cuckney by 8 wickets at Birchover Park. The shortened game begun at just before 4 pm and the home side won the toss and asked Cuckney to bat first and they posted a score of 155 for the loss of 6 wickets, Will Butler scoring 35 and Adam Burgess 29. For the Cavaliers, Umair Ghazall headed the bowling figures with 3-39.

In response, the Cavaliers overcame the Cuckney total inside 28 for the loss of only two wickets with Morteza Ali contributing 61 not out and Shahbaz Alam 41. This result gave Cavaliers 18 points to Cuckney’s 4.

The only other game to reach a conclusion was that between Mansfield Hosiery Mills and Kimberley at The Private Ground in Kimberley; this match also started just before 4 pm and the visitors won the toss and and chose to set a target by batting first. They scored quickly and finished on 200 for 5 from their 35 overs; Matt New (60*, 2x4 & 4x6) and Guruge Fernando (67, 5x4 & 4x6) were the main contributors assisted by Gareth Curtis with 38.

The home side gained a five wicket win by reaching 201 for 5 in just short of 31 overs with Nicholas Langford leading the charge with an unbeaten 78 (9x4 & 1x6) with excellent support from John Terry with 35. This result gave Kimberley 18 points and moved them up to 5th in the table.

The only other game that started only lasted 8 overs between Papplewick and Welbeck Colliery; Papplewick were progressing to 22-3 when the rain forced the game to be abandoned with Welbeck’s Andrew Marchant disappointed that the game finished when he had already taken 2 for 6.

The matches between Attenborough and Radcliffe, Clifton and Notts Academy and Caythorpe and Wollaton all abandoned without a ball being bowled, and each side being awarded six points.

This round of games therefore leaves Cavaliers topping the table with 56 points, some 15 ahead of the two sides in equal second place Caythorpe and Papplewick. At the other end, Attenborough are propping up the table with 9 points alongside Radcliffe on 18. Both will look to reduce the gap on 9th placed Welbeck who are some distance away on 29.

Papplewick 298-8, Cuckney 278-8

Lots of runs at Cuckney again yesterday in a match that finished in poor light with Daniel Watson hitting the ball to every corner of the ground.

THIS WEEKS RESULTS

Caythorpe............................v...Mansfield Hosiery Mills...CAYTHORPE winning draw
Welbeck Colliery.................v...Clifton Village...CLIFTON won by 6 wkts
Notts Academy....................v...Kimberley Institute...NOTTS ACADEMY winning draw
Cuckney...............................v...Papplewick & Linby...PAPPLEWICK winning draw
Wollaton..............................v...Attenborough...WOLLATON won by 6 wkts
Radcliffe on Trent...............v...West Indian Cavaliers...CAVALIERS won by 4 wkts

The results for the second round of fixtures in the Nottinghamshire Premier League demonstrate how quickly winning and losing habits can be ingrained with Cavaliers being the only side to have won both games and Attenborough being the only side to have lost twice.

Clifton took steps to recover from their season-opening loss when they travelled to Welbeck; the home side won the toss and were bowled out for 201 in 49.2 overs when they chose to bat first with Martin Dobson getting 58 and Robert French 49. The outstanding Clifton bowler was Martin Weightman who secured 7-44 in 13 outstanding overs. In response, Clifton knocked off the runs with ten overs to spare to record a comprehensive 6 wicket victory. Martin Weightman could rightly claim to be the player of the match with 57 runs to go with his bowling heroics and Liam Andrews led the way with 78 not out.

Caythorpe followed up their win in round with one with a winning draw at home to Mansfield Hosiery Mills. The Mansfield side won the toss and opted to field first and restricted Caythorpe to 192 for 8 with James Hawley leading the way with 79 and Keshara Jayasinghe contributing a worthy 3-39 for the visitors. In response, Mansfield managed to hang on at 150 for 8 with only Stephen Ludlum making a significant contribution with 31 and Steve Randall returning 3-58. Mention should also be made of Caythorpe ‘keeper who claimed two catches and two stumpings.

Another side just managing to avoid defeat were Kimberley who were the Notts Academy’s first visitors to Lady Bay in the Premier League this season. Kimberley won the toss but may have cause to regret asking the youngsters to have first knock as they closed on 253-7. Matt Wright was the most successful Kimberley bowler returning 4-64 and Sam Kelsall (66) and Akhil Patel (60) making the most telling contributions with the bat. Kimberley clung on to a losing draw on 156-9 with Jarred Sewell scoring 54 and Patel rounding off a good day with 2-22 from 15 overs.

The highest scoring game of the day took place at Cuckney where they hosted Papplewick who posted a first innings total of 298 for 5 with Richard King top scoring with 91 not out, ably supported by Phil DeFreitas (60) as they put on 128 for the 5th wicket; Mark Nelson chipped with a valuable 59. On a good batting strip, the home side got within 20 runs of victory by scoring 278-8, Daniel Watson clocking up his first ton of the year (119*), supported by skipper Richard Stroh with 59 as they put on 101 for the 4th wicket. The most successful bowler on the day was Papplewick’s Jim Rhodes weighing in with 3-81.

The form side after two games are West Indian Cavaliers who notched up their second victory by travelling to Radcliffe and beating them by 4 wickets. The visitors won the toss and the proceeded to restrict Radcliffe to 184 for 8; Zubin Faisal cashed in with 4-31 supported by Alex Tudor with 3-54. Rob Sutton led the charge for the home side with 57 with Michael Bratt contributing 30. For the Cavaliers, Bilal Shafayat scored 45 and the Cavaliers were seen over the line by Dominic Williamson with 34*. The best return for Radcliffe came from Simon Ward with 3 for 25.

Attenborough are firmly stuck at the bottom of the table after two games by losing to home side Wollaton by 6 wickets in a low-scoring affair. Having been inserted, Attenborough were skittled for 90 with only Tom Murray making a significant contribution with 31 not out. Richard Cooper was the most successful bowler with 4-18 and veteran Karl Glendenning contributing 33 to the run chase.

First home match of the season and hopes & spirits were high after the result last week

Cuckney batted first on what looked like a good, if a little, damp wicket and nobody was sure how it would play

Dan and Tails opened, but Tails fell early and Ed was next. Dan and Ed moved the score along until Ed was caught pulling and in came the legend that is Stevey Ostler. An air of anticipation hung as he walked out to the middle, having not picked up a bat since the end of last season. However, we shouldn't have worried, as after a steady start he was soon into his stride hitting four 4's in his 33.

During this time Dan had fallen and the run rate had slowed dramatically, and with 16 overs to go Cuckney were only in the low 60's, and somebody needed to play an aggressive, but responsible, innings to attain a defendable score, but we had the 3 of the best ball strikers in the team to come.

When Ben fell, Luke came in having not batted this season, but has looked good in the nets. How would he play out on the field. The answer could not have been a more positive one, and some lovely straight fours, along with some sensible singles he rapidly increased the run rate, and the score eventually reached 164 for 9 off the allotted 46 overs. A magnificent achievement in the last 16 overs.

Woodsetts batted and some excellent early swing bowling saw Henry take 2 and Luke 1 wicket, and Woodsetts never really looked like achieving their target, despite a good partnership for the 4th wicket, and wickets fell at regular intervals . Could the ultimate victory be attained.

Unfortunately, a nineth wicket stand frustrated the bowlers, and it was only off the last ball that another wicket fell as Woodsetts tried for a batting point, Ed throwing the stumps down from the opposite end of the wicket to add our final bowling point.

A winning draw, and another fantastic result for the young guns

Man of the match: The wickets were shared about between the bowlers, and despite a legendary return by The Ostler, the match winning innings by Luke sees him lift this weeks award. Well batted young man

Here we go, Here we go, Here we go…..AGAIN

Its the start of a LONG awaited season, and its about time too.

A nice sunny day greeted us for the first match, and after winning the toss, Cliff decided to let Manton bat on a green wicket.

A fantastically tight opening spell of bowling by Luke and Taylor saw Manton struggle to score runs, and after 12 overs only 28 runs had been scored with 3 wickets down, including a spectacular leg side catch from Dan off an inside edge. (Taylor started with 3 maidens & Luke 3 out of the first 4 too).

The pressure was on Manton to score runs against the new bowlers, and a good partnership developed for the 4th wicket and it looked like Manton had made a good recovery. However Ben broke the partnership, and the innings fell apart from there, Manton finally reaching 122 all out off 38 overs.

Cuckneys innings started solidly, with Dan and Taylor opening, until a rash shot saw Dan go, but Taylor looked set for the long haul.

It was hard going on a difficult pitch, but steady progress was made, and a quick cameo from Kev moved the score along.

The result never looked in doubt even after Kev fell, and Taylor and Ben saw us home with 13 overs to spare.

An excellent result and a great start to the season, with a full 20 points.

Man of the Match: A couple of good bowling performances to consider, but for both his bowling and batting through the whole innings, Taylor is the stand out player this week.
